Suspicious Letter Found at CGA

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Two medical staff members at the clinic located at the Coast Guard Academy were treated for minor medical symptoms at approximately 1 p.m. today after opening a suspicious letter that was received in the mail.

Emergency response officials determined there was no dangerous substance present on the letter.

Academy personnel took immediate steps to isolate the letter and assist those who came in contact with it. Both staff members, who reported symptoms of shortness of breath to medical technicians, have since been released and are symptom free.

The Coast Guard Academy Police, New London Police Department, New London Fire Department, Coast Guard Investigative Service and the U.S. Navy Hazardous Materials Team (HAZMAT) responded to the incident.

An email notice was sent throughout the campus and calls were made notifying people not to open any incoming mail that might appear strange or threatening. Additional precautions regarding the reviewing of incoming mail are being taken at this time.

The letter has been turned over to Coast Guard Investigative Service officers who will determine what, if any, further action is necessary.
